Times

In
the 19th century horses stomped along Long Acre Square never thinking
that nearby property values would soar and tourists would flock by the
millions. But they could probably smell the change in the air.

The
development of New York City began in the south and worked its way up
past Astor Place, past Herald Square and soon to 42nd Street. According
to author Jill Stone, by the 1880s, the length of Broadway between Madison
Square and 42nd Street had become the center of New York's social scene.
When the electric street lamps were added to this popular strip, the
street was given its nickname "The Great White Way."
