The
cupboards of women who have disordered
eating patterns are very often bare.
The approach at the institute requires
women to "legalize" all foods,
encouraging them to bring a wide variety
and ample amounts of food into their
homes. The idea is that scarcity leads
to feelings of deprivation which leads
to bingeing.
Kathryn,
who never attended the institute, has
adopted a similar approach. She says
she no longer denies herself specific
foods and hasn’t binged since childhood.
"My
body image is much better than it ever
was," she says. "I don’t know
if there is peace, but there is acceptance."
