The cupboards of women who have disordered eating patterns are very often bare. The approach at the institute requires women to "legalize" all foods, encouraging them to bring a wide variety and ample amounts of food into their homes. The idea is that scarcity leads to feelings of deprivation which leads to bingeing.

Kathryn, who never attended the institute, has adopted a similar approach. She says she no longer denies herself specific foods and hasn’t binged since childhood.

"My body image is much better than it ever was," she says. "I don’t know if there is peace, but there is acceptance."
