Clients
pose for a photo session in either their
home or in Turk's Brooklyn apartment.
"I
try to get at what's special, and everyone
has got special," says Turk.
Many
of Turk's clients have intense feelings
of loathing their body; some have eating
disorders;
others have been sexual abused. Ana
herself was the victim of sexual abuse.
"When
they see the images of themselves, they
look different," Turk says. "Then
they start to look at the ones that
are pleasing, and they start to see
their loss of perception."

Turk
charges $450 per session, which pays
for the film, processing and printing
and one photo shoot that lasts about
three hours.
Ana
admits she hated the photos at first.
"When
I first saw the pictures, I went crazy,"
she says. "But it was like a road
accident. I couldn’t stop looking and
then finally I got used to seeing what
I thought was ugly. I got desensitized
to it."
