"I
became aware of my body when everyone
else did," she says.
Women
who are chronically dissatisfied with
their bodies like Ana may be biologically
doomed to fail in their pursuit of perfection.
Most women have an ideal body weight
that is 13 percent to 19 percent lower
than that which is considered healthy
for their frame, according to a 1992
study.

"Ninety-five
percent of women can’t achieve their
ideal," says Terry Poulton, author
of the 1997 book, "Fat Chicks:
How Big Business Profits by Making Women
Hate Their Bodies and How to Fight
Back."
Ellen
Fisher Turk, a New York City photographer,
eventually helped Ana overcome her body
image issues with her camera.
Fisher
Turk believes she has a radical solution
for women with Ana’s predicament. In
1995, after photographing a friend who
had been sexually abused and helping
her begin to see her body in a different
light, Turk began convincing women who
typically cringe at the sight of themselves
to confront their demons head on.
